Services > Carotid Artery Blockages

  1. The carotid arteries are the dominant blood supply to the brain. Carotid Artery Atherosclerotic Plaque development is common with aging. Certain patients are
more likely to develop plaque including smokers, patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetics.

  2. Severe carotid artery stenosis (narrowing) can lead to the development of TIA’s (mini strokes) or strokes. Our Vascular and Endovascular surgeons are expert in the medical and surgical treatment of patients with carotid artery stenosis. We have treated thousands of patients with this disease. Currently, the gold standard for surgery remains carotid endarterectomy, which is a safe procedure done via a neck incision and typically an overnight stay in the hospital .

  3. The newest option for treating carotid stenosis is carotid artery stent (CAS) deployment. This technology is applicable to a minority of patients currently and our Endovascular Surgeons are offering this to appropriate candidates. Notably, we participate in national and international research studies, including the Sapphire and Capture 2 trials.
