Evolving Technology on Varicose Vein Treatment
October 26, 2010
Until just a few months ago, patients coming to Dr. Matthew Klein or Dr. David Wulkan for relief from painful varicose veins had limited options.
“In the past, severe varicose veins were treated with a surgical procedure that was performed in a hospital operating room under general or spinal anesthesia,” Dr. Klein says.
As a result, patients encountered quite a bit of pain and needed about two weeks to recover before they could get back to their normal routine.
Now, however, thanks to evolving technology, the two board-certified surgeons are using lasers to help patients get relief from the pain and unsightliness of varicose veins. Since the procedure is a minimally invasive office procedure, patients walk away within minutes of the surgery with little or no discomfort and significantly less scarring.
“Most of our patients go back to work the next day,” Dr. Klein says.
Known as EndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), the procedure is being used by the two surgeons – both trained at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital and each having over twenty years of surgical experience. EVLT uses a laser to seal varicose veins shut, thus eliminating swelling that can cause pain. In the past, surgeons would treat varicose veins by surgically removing them, which can be a painful process. Now, Dr. Wulkan says, most patients need only over-the-counter pain medicine after they leave the office.
“We tell patients to walk immediately after the treatment,” he said.
While the procedure has been in use for several years, Dr. Wulkan and Dr. Klein waited until scientific studies showing the long-term effectiveness and safety of the procedure were complete before adopting it. Those patients that visit Surgical Associates of Palm Beach County will find the office has the latest equipment and a well-trained staff. An ICAVL certified vascular lab at the office is used for ultra sound evaluation of veins prior to treatment.
“Anyone who is suffering from the pain of varicose veins should know about this process and should consider coming in for an evaluation,” Dr. Wulkan said.
